American support for Ukraine’s Association Agreement signature: geopolitical design to reorientate Ukraine from Russia towards West
September 6, 2013
Unexpectedly for itself Ukraine happened to be on the peak of geopolitical interests of the leading world countries. All – domestic Ukrainian as well as world political players – are trying to use Ukraine’s Association Agreement (AA) signature with the European Union scheduled for November for their own purpose.
In Ukraine – representatives of the authorities and the opposition are publicly fighting for the right to be considered the “fathers of Ukraine’s European integration”. Though the former, judging by the recent events in the Ukrainian political life (President’s address to the parliament with the demand to support necessary “European integration” laws, the public “taming of the shrew” pro-government deputies oriented towards Russia, and also establishing the dialogue with the opposition) are doing it better than the latter.
The interest of Russia and its leadership is naturally the extreme opposite – to bar the AA signature. Evidently, Vladimir Putin in due time groveled very well Zbigniew Brzezinski’s work “The Grand Chessboard” which, among other things, unambiguously reads that Russia cannot revive its empire, which, by the way, Mr Putin is now intensively building by means of activating the Customs Union, without Ukraine. Except the geopolitical, Vladimir Putin also has the domestic political interest in the derangement of the Association Agreement signature between Ukraine and the EU. In case of his failure –a carefully constructed myth of his invincibility will collapse inside Russia, which, you must admit, is fraught with serious consequences for Russian President’s personal power.
Ukraine’s European partners also have their interests. For example, it is not a secret that Poland, Lithuania and the other most active “advocates” of Ukraine in the EU are ready to sign the Agreement with minimal conditions, as for them it is also disadvantageous in the geographic aspect to be the territory on the border between the European Union and Russia’s sphere of influence. Germany is now undergoing the parliamentary elections and the subject of Ukraine’s European integration with the emphasis on Yulia Tymoshenko’s release from prison as a necessary condition is being actively used by the staff of the incumbent Chancellor.
But over the last period of time US representatives has started (so far – only in the public sphere) to take active actions on the issue of Ukraine’s European integration. Against the background of the considerable deterioration of the relations between Moscow and Washington on the one hand and Moscow and Kyiv on the other hand the official US representatives openly expressed their support for the Association Agreement signature between Ukraine and the EU. Particularly, new US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt said lately, that Ukraine has very good chances to sign the EU Association Agreement. “And I say that based on what I heard from government leaders, opposition leaders, but also my European colleagues, – the diplomat emphasized. – But I am hopeful and optimistic. I am not a betting person, but I would certainly give better odds than 50/50.” In his turn President Barack Obama in a joint statement with the head of the Swedish government Fredrik Reinfeldt emphasized their strong support for the “Eastern Partnership” initiative, with Ukraine as the central country. “We emphasized our support for the EU’s Eastern Partnership as a means to help address economic challenges in the region, promote the EU integration of the Eastern European partner countries, and develop democracy, respect for human rights, and rule of law,” the statement reads among other things.
Obviously, by means of public support for Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration the US is trying to mollify the position of those EU countries which are traditionally orientated towards Washington. The US is endeavoring to use the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU for the final introduction of Ukraine into the European political and cultural and civilization matrix and blocking Russia’s influence in the region. Why do they need it? They were probably also carried away by and made notes of Brzezinski’s works.
